HP Pavilion DV4-1227US 14.1-Inch Laptop – Espresso Black Review
I ordered this laptop on the HP website and, so far so good I haven’t had any problems. It’s packed with features, and the best part is, that it’s affordable. I got my laptop for $701.00, of course this was with the use of a coupon, and a student discount, plus the shipping was free, not only that, but I got free upgrades on the memory and hard drive. I think this is the perfect laptop for a student, because it’s not that heavy and you can easily take it with you where ever you want. I also love the 14″ screen it’s not too big, but it’s not too small, to me it’s the perfect screen size on a laptop. The fan is a little noisy at times, but it’s not a major concern. It also gets quite hot on the bottom, but I think most laptops do. The battery life I found to be so-so, not the best, but not bad either.

First of all, I do not own the unit, I am just hoping someone will comment on my ‘review’. I searched for “laptop” in electronics, and then sorted the list by BestSelling. Now i see its ranked #1 in electronics, and #6 in laptops…why is it ranked so high if it has only one customer review, and that customer gave it one star? You’d think that with such a huge volume of customers purchasing the unit that there’d be more reviews? Or does no review define a good product–nothing to gripe about? Any answers would be appreciated. BTW i gave it 5 stars, to give it the benefit of the doubt if in fact it is such a good peice of hardware.

I placed the order yesterday and chose 1 day shipping. I was so glad when I received the laptop today. Now I found that there is no sound. If I use earplug I can hear the sound, but as soon as I unplug it I can’t hear anything. Got really confused.

I have a slightly different version of the DV4 that the one described, but the product has been outstanding. Very solid construction, everything works well – no problems at all. The system came with Vista installed, but I have also installed Linux (Fedora 10) and am currently running Windows 7 beta. No problems whatsoever. I have had many HP products over the years – and this is one of the best I have ever seen or used by any vendor. One reason that I chose HP was the super support – email, phone, download supports in the future, etc. Looking forward to many years for a great product ! BTW: The product was not released until 2008, thus the review above that complains about the video card is not relevant to this product.

Samsung NC10-14GB 10.2-Inch Netbook Review
I first purchased the Lenovo S10 which was a very good netbook. However, I also bought a Samsung NC10. I would have to give Samsung top marks for quality built, design, battery life, and keyboard size. If you are looking to buy a netbook (I spent months researching), I would definitely recommend the Samsung.

There are a lot of reviews here raving about this netbook, so I won’t repeat those statements. This really is a great little ultra portable computer. But one feature that I stumbled upon that made a difference to me was with the trackpad. Yes, as stated in all the reviews, it is small. Obviously Samsung wanted to keep the overall size of the case down. But, while looking at the various options for the trackpad I turned on the “tackball” option. This lets the cursor behave like you are actually using a trackball. Meaning, the cursor carries a momentum with it. With a flip on the trackpad you can get the cursor to gently glide across the screen. This really helps making up for the small trackpad. If you have ever used a trackball before, you will instantly appreciate this feature.
I highly suggest you try it out.

I travel a couple of times a year and dragging my 17″ laptop was a pain. I carried it around the airport in a backpack, and after a while it got very heavy. I tried a rolling case for it, but it was so big, I couldn’t fit it under the seat and leave any room for my feet. I’m a student and I only need it to check my email, work on homework, and check in on online classes while I’m gone. This little netbook is perfect for that. I’m not trying to run any big apps on it, and I notice no lag in performance at all. It’s fast and efficient, the keyboard is larger than other netbooks I tried, and the battery life is amazing. An added bonus is the built in webcam. I use it to video chat with my family in Texas, and the video and audio quality is about equal to my set up on my desktop pc.

This has been one of the best laptops I’ve ever used, and among netbooks, this is the only one I’m not annoyed on a regular basis by. The atom n270 is very quick for running basic applications and word processing. The keyboard is very nice with one tiny problem; I occasionally hit caps lock when I want an A. The integrated bluetooth and widcomm drivers work fine for sending and receiving files and audio, the sound card is fine for listening to music and watching videos, the webcam works fine in both skype and google talk, The microphone is adequate, the battery life really is eight hours, I was able to eek out 8 hours 14 minutes with wifi off and the backlight low. With regular settings, the battery will pull off a rather good seven hours and with everything running at maximum it still does five. The SD card slot has worked fine and the hinge stays steady. With the exception of the caps lock key, this is the perfect laptop for the power user looking for something to tide themselves over during the day in place of a desktop or larger laptop. Among windows machines, I’ve never seen a faster BIOS, which loads up in well under a second. Total boot time from hibernation is about 25 seconds. Also, the Fn key commands on the function keys and arrow keys are reasonably intuitive. However, I can’t recommend this for anyone who has large fingers or dislikes small screens. My friends call it the smurf laptop, and I now dance around macbook users with my extra battery life. This is as close to perfection as laptops ever get.
